Sept. 1, 1939 - Sept. 2, 1945

This six-year global war was the deadliest conflict in history, with more than 60 million, or 2.5 percent of the world's population, killed. On the Allied side alone, more than 16,000,000 military personnel were killed. There are 11 living recipients of the Medal of Honor who served in World War II, and 456 deceased recipients.
