U.S. Air Force

The Air Force Medal is the newest version, created in 1965. The first of 17 Air Force recipients was Major Bernard F. Fisher in 1967, for action in South Vietnam. Before that time, members of the the Army Air Corps received Army Medals. The first airman to receive a Medal was Captain Edward Rickenbacker, the famous fighter pilot of World War I.
